Allen Centennial Garden

More Information Seed Keeper and Plant Materials Assistant Fall 2022

This in-person volunteer will spend time assisting Allen Centennial Garden staff in harvesting, drying, cleaning, storing, and labeling seed materials collected in Allen Centennial Garden. Allen Centennial Garden will be hosting a festival this fall dedicated to exploring the diverse ways humans have celebrated the earth's abundance, especially Afro-diasphoric, Hmong, and Indigenous cultures. Each culture will be represented by culturally significant vegetable crops in the new Wyman Kitchen garden. These volunteers would support us in saving seeds from our kitchen garden and other gardens on our property. These seeds could be used in the harvest festival and beyond. For, seeds are valuable resources that are used for growing new plants and creating food, dye, fiber, and/or art. As an example, our volunteer might harvest tomatoes or dried up flowers. They would then clean these seeds in a process specific to that plant. These processes are varied and include fermenting and drying. The seed would be stored and labeled for later use. Volunteers should wear what is most comfortable to them to work outside when harvesting seed or inside when cleaning seed.

More Information Community Integration and Companionship Volunteer Fall 2022

Please consider joining us for interactive sessions with our residents with limited community options. Friendship is an immeasurable gift to give to someone. Each week you will provide this gift to someone in need through activities and fall walks on our beautiful grounds when weather permits. Prior to the pandemic we had three evenings a week of Badger Volunteers, many of them returning each semester. We are as with other providers and volunteers, starting over as many of our former students who had come have graduated. Our team will be small but full of life and fun! *Being a medical facility Volunteers will need to show proof of Covid vaccination at orientation*. In return you will be assigned a Covid vaccinated resident. The resident you are assigned will be the same one each week in order enable a friendship to grow. Masks at our home are still mandatory and you will receive a surgical mask each week to don during your visit. The team should plan on pick up from cab/Uber at 4:00pm so that you arrive on our campus by 4:25pm. The activities will be from 4:30pm until 5:30pm with cab/Uber return planned for 5:40pm putting you back at campus by 6:00pm. We count your travel time into your volunteer hours because of the distance to our campus on the North East Side of Madison. I look forward to seeing you this fall as we begin our journey back to in person volunteering!
