Lake View Community School Outdoor Classroom

Support our Outdoor Learning Program Coordinator with various tasks relating to the development, maintenance, and utilization of Lake View Community School's Outdoor Classroom. Tasks will mostly be outdoors in varied weather conditions and may include weeding and mulching our school garden, landscaping in our school forest, and taking students outdoors to engage in nature based learning projects. Lake View Community School is a public elementary school (K-5) located on the north side of Madison on three acres of land that includes a school forest, garden, prairie, pollinators beds, and fruit bearing trees and bushes. Approximately 80% of our students are considered low income, 73% are BIPOC, and 40% are English Language Learners (with 15 home languages represented!) For many of our students, school is the only place they engage with nature. Badger Volunteers are a vital resource for developing and maintaining our beautiful school grounds and their presence makes it easy for students and teachers to take learning outdoors!

The mission of Lake View's Outdoor Classroom is to create a place and experiential, interdisciplinary curriculum that promotes academic achievement, cooperation, curiosity and stewardship in our restored urban forest, gardens and neighborhood resulting in students and families using what they learn to improve where they live locally and globally and promote a healthy lifestyle.
