Seed Keeper and Plant Materials Assistant

Allen Centennial Garden

This in-person volunteer will spend time assisting Allen Centennial Garden staff in harvesting, drying, cleaning, storing, and labeling seed materials collected in Allen Centennial Garden. Allen Centennial Garden will be hosting a festival this fall dedicated to exploring the diverse ways humans have celebrated the earth's abundance, especially Afro-diasphoric, Hmong, and Indigenous cultures. Each culture will be represented by culturally significant vegetable crops in the new Wyman Kitchen garden. These volunteers would support us in saving seeds from our kitchen garden and other gardens on our property. These seeds could be used in the harvest festival and beyond. For, seeds are valuable resources that are used for growing new plants and creating food, dye, fiber, and/or art. As an example, our volunteer might harvest tomatoes or dried up flowers. They would then clean these seeds in a process specific to that plant. These processes are varied and include fermenting and drying. The seed would be stored and labeled for later use. Volunteers should wear what is most comfortable to them to work outside when harvesting seed or inside when cleaning seed.

Allen Centennial Garden is the artful living laboratory and public botanical garden of the Horticulture Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Garden serves as an outdoor classroom for UW-Madison students and the surrounding communities, providing meaningful learning opportunities for visitors of all ages.
